The opera Butterfly Lovers is a cross-cultural interdisciplinary project aimed at creating a unique artistic work, a result of an Italo-Chinese cultural and creative exchange combining orchestral music, bel canto singing, dance, architecture, sculpture, design/fashion and new technologies.
The opera was inspired by the Chinese tale of Liang Shanbo and Zhu Yingtai, two doomed young lovers who surrender to their inevitable fate, which prevents them from fulfilling their love. They will die, but their spirits live on to eternity in the shape of two beautiful butterflies.
“Ciò che in vita ha unito l’amore, neanche la morte potrà separare”
“What love united in life, not even death will be able to divide”
“那是生命中的生死之爱,甚至死亡都无法分开!”
(II Act – II Scene, Shanbo and Yingtai)
